Girls Battle Local Rival

On the eve of the school’s departure for a long awaited Thanksgiving break, the huskies played NSA at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.  This match up is always highly anticipated among both schools, and this year was no different. The girls played hard but had moments of breakdown that cost some critical momentum changes.  The final score ended up 7-0 with a NSA victory; however, the girls are already eager for a re-match in March.  Thank you to all the faculty and student body that came out and supported to the very end. Enjoy your break! See you back on the ice Tuesday 29th.

Nice Job Girls Keep Up The Good Work!

Spartans Strike Huskies in Second Game

In the second game of the double header with Stanstead, Northwood started out strong, outshooting Stanstead early in the first period. Trouble came though when Stanstead took a penalty. The first Northwood power play failed to keep possession of the puck and when Stanstead iced it, S. Lefort, the leading scorer for the Canadian U18 team, beat both Northwood defenders to the puck and went in alone on the Northwood goalie, Nicole G. She scored top glove to put Stanstead up. The second power play unit went out, but they were again stunned by Stanstead’s aggressiveness on the PK, and they let a Spartan sneak by for another breakaway.

After a brief timeout, Northwood regained their composure, but Stanstead was not satisfied. They scored again for a 3-0 lead when Lefort beat another Northwood defender cleanly and found an open teammate in front of the net. At that point, Nicole G. had had enough and Gabi P. took over the net.

Hope seemed dim, but Northwood kept their heads high and kept grinding. With only a second left in the first, Rachael P. took the puck into the Spartan zone and released a quick wrist shot that beat Stanstead’s goal.

The second period started off with some back and forth play, with both teams getting quality chances and both goalies turning them away. When Stanstead took a long shot and Northwood failed to clear out the front of the net, the Spartans again went up by 3. Soon after though, Northwood answered with a rebound of their own when Hailey S. kept pounding away until she scored to put Northwood within 2 again.

The Huskies could come no closer though and Stanstead scored their last goal late in the third for a final of 5-2.

Overall, the girls had a positive weekend and again made strides towards improving. They were able to play at a terrific facility of Middlebury College and took a great tour of the campus led by alums Mathieu Castongauy ’09, a junior Panther hockey player, and Jamie McKenna ’03 who now serves as the Middlebury men’s hockey assistant coach. They are pictured with the team in front of the Panther at Kenyon Arena.

Huskies Draw with Defending League Champs

The Northwood girls drove across the new Champlain bridge to meet defending NAPHA champions at Middlebury College’s Kenyon Arena.

The Huskies came out of the gates rolling with good forechecking and strong defensive zone play. When they went up a player, they were able to capitalize when Rachael P. made a great play to keep the puck in at the blue line and then scored off of a quick shot.

The back and forth play went Stanstead’s way when they found a player coming out of the penalty box for a breakaway in the second. They then scored five minutes later to take the lead. The Huskies did not hang their heads, though. More determined than ever, they took it hard to Stanstead and Jess B. finally tied it up with a beautiful rebound goal.

The teams battled in the third and with brilliant goaltending by Nicole G. Northwood gained momentum. Two posts and a few missed rebounds later, regulation ended in a tie.

Middlebury Coach Bill Mandigo gave the ok to play an overtime period, but ten minutes later there was still no winner. The two teams played one more five minute OT, but called it a draw after that.

The Huskies will have to wait until Saturday afternoon, when the two teams meet again.

Alumnae Spotting!

Jenni Hamel (in center back) and Kirsten Beckman (in orange shirt) surrounded by current Northwood players

This past weekend in Rochester, Northwood was well represented by female alums who once laced up the skates for the huskies. First, Steph Moberg ’06 showed up at the TSC center to scout some of the current Northwood players. This year will be Steph’s second year as an assistant coach at Connecticut College. She is pictured at right with assistant girls hockey coach, Erin Farmer.

Our first game on Saturday was attended by Marissa N. ’08, sister of current player, Grace. Marissa is currently a senior at Niagara University. Also at the game were Kim and Brian Hamel, parents of Jenni Hamel ’10. Kim and Brian were in town to watch Jenni and her Utica Pioneers take on RIT Tigers. The huskies had the chance to watch the game as well, where they witnessed Jenni turning away over 60 shots and Kristen Beckman ’10 killing penalties. Also at the RIT vs. Utica game was Michelle Witz ’05, who played three years with the Pioneers and is currently pursuing her masters in special education. Michelle is also the sister of Jayne, who is a current Northwood sophomore. Below is a picture of Michelle with Hailey S., Brennan B., Cailey H., Cassie K., and Monica M.

Huskies Still Looking for First Win

Northwood Celebration

At the Bauer International Invite, the Northwood girls faced a tough draw of Victory Honda (Michigan), Kanata Rangers (Canada) and Assabet Valley (Massachusetts). After arriving on Thursday night, the girls started their tournament Friday morning.

In the first game of the tournament against Victory Honda, the Huskies got off to a rough start with Victory Honda scoring early in the first period on a weak goal and then again in the second on the power play. Down two, the Huskies knew it was do or die time when they had their own power play. With beautiful puck movement, the girls got Victory Honda out of position and Casey K. set up Erin B. who beat the goalie low stick side to get on the board. Two minutes later, Northwood found themselves again up a player, and this time Jess B. sniped one high glove to even out the score. However, late in the third, another Victory Honda goal put them out front again. This time Northwood didn’t have enough time to tie it up.

Later in the day, Northwood faced off against the Kanata Rangers. An early power play goal by Kanata gave them the lead. Northwood dominated play , outshooting Kanata in the first and second periods but the Huskies were unable to put one over the goal line. To start the third period, Rachael P. broke up a play in the defensive zone and then skated it into Kanata’s zone. After taking a good low shot, the rebound came out and Jess G. put it upstairs for the tie. Nicole G. played a strong game in net.

On Saturday, Northwood took on Assabet Valley’s Major team. The team was set back on their heels right from the start and seemed unable to stay with Assabet’s speed. Assabet got on the board early and often, scoring three in the first period. Northwood regrouped a bit in between periods and held off the attack until late in the second period. However, they could not hold back Assabet’s offense and they ended up in the hole by 9.

On Sunday, Northwood will play a consolation game against the St. Louis Lady Blues. They are hoping to get on the board early and often, and finally get to ring the victory bell on their return to school!
