Two Northwood junior hockey players have been named to the Cum Laude Society, the highest academic honor at Northwood School. Gaby P. and Hailey S. earned this honor by being at the top of the junior class while taking difficult courses and managing extracurricular activities. Induction to the society is based on a student’s natural intellect, curiosity, and course work. Congratulations!

Northwood Commencement

On a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in May, the Northwood class of 2012 filed down from the building they had called home for the last four years to a beautiful tent spread on Marcy field. Family and friends filled the tent and celebrated the accomplishments and bright futures of the hopeful, yet nostalgic, graduates.

Casey, a four year survivor, captain of the girls’ hockey team, RA, and school leader gave a poignant account of her time at Northwood as one of the two speakers for the class. She recalled funny moments, such as Nicole G. sleep-walking to Main in the middle of the night, and got teary as she spoke of her family of Northwood students and faculty that she’d soon be leaving behind. Before the ceremony was over and the victory bell rung, she had also won the Phil Clough award, given to a student who best exemplifies the spirit of Northwood.

The night before graduation, Senior Dinner, was highlighted by academic and athletic awards including Cum Laude inductions – including Gaby P. and Hailey S. The Linda Friedlander award, given to the finest female athlete went to Halle. The Holt Hockey Award, for sportsmanship and love of the game, went to Jess G, who also won the social science award. The Tim Smythe award, given to the North Country’s most hearty and passionate athlete went to Alexa.

Congratulations to all graduates, especially the ladies who were proud to wear a Huskie jersey!

And the winner is…

Northwood School held its annual Athletic Awards banquet tonight. The formal dinner event allows coaches from all the competitive and recreational sports at Northwood to give out their Coach’s Award. The Coach’s Award goes to the student-athlete who epitomizes the expression “there is no I in team” and who has a true passion for her sport.

The girls’ hockey Coach’s Award went to Casey K ’12. Casey leads in her words and actions and lives the Northwood School core values of Compassion, Courage, Respect, Responsibility, and Integrity effortlessly.

The girls’ soccer Coach’s Award went to Halle K ’12. Halle was a force on the soccer team while also mentoring newer players and assisting the coaches with anything that was necessary.

The girls’ lacrosse Coach’s Award went to Julie D ’13. Julie had never held a lacrosse stick before coming to Northwood but picked up the sport with enthusiasm and tenacity.

Congratulations to the three members of the girls’ hockey team on their awards!

A Great Day for Tommy’s Walk

20120512-202108.jpg

For more than a dozen years, Northwood School has hosted an annual fundraiser for the Myelin Project – an organization that funds research related to demyelinating diseases. This year, the fundraiser held a special meaning as Tommy Fleming ’05 succumbed to health issues related to multiple sclerosis this past fall. The Northwood Student Council took the lead and renamed the fundraiser “Tommy’s Walk.”

Members of the Northwood community planned, prepped, painted, tye-dyed, and baked in anticipation of the walkathon, held on the Olympic Oval on May 12th. The strong turn-out was aided by the beautiful weather and meaningful cause.
