Northwood Class of 2013 Says Tearful Good-bye

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the Northwood Class of 2013 gathered in the hall of the Allyn building to begin their final walk as a class to their graduation. The tents on the field had been transformed from Senior Dinner seating to rows of chairs to accommodate family, friends, and of course the Northwood community. Most seniors felt a mix of joy, apprehension, and sadness as they prepared to say good-bye to their home.

The ceremony was meaningful and light. Hailey S. was chosen as an honored speaker for the senior class and her descriptions and slight roasts of the faculty brought laughter to all while her sentiments on the community the seniors helped to create brought tears to some. The guest speaker, Mark Lauria, reminded students that when they began their education 13 years ago, the world was vastly different. He encouraged the senior class to be responsible with the ever increasing technological advances and to remember the values they have learned at Northwood as they make their way through a changing world. Mr. Good then presented faculty and senior awards. The girls’ hockey team was well-represented on the podium with four students receiving awards at Graduation. In addition to the graduation awards, four students won academic and athletic awards at the Senior Dinner on Friday night. Below is a listing of the awards and the award winner:

Graduation Awards

Jess B. won the School Seal award,

“The School Seal is the visual representation of what we are and what we stand for. The annual prize is awarded to the senior who best lives up to the high ideals of our Core Values:

Responsibility, Courage, Compassion, Integrity, and Respect

Just as the School Seal represents our school, so does the work and influence of this year’s winner embody all that we aspire to be.”

Serena M. won the Harry McDonald award,

“Harry McDonald served behind the scenes at Northwood School for thirty years. The award in his name honors a student for whom giving is more important than receiving and who puts the greater good in front of her own interests. For all she has done for the greater Northwood School community, we extend our gratitude to Serena”

Hailey S. won a top scholar award, for the second highest GPA in the senior class and Julie D. won a Headmaster’s award for being a quiet, but constant, positive presence during her time at Northwood.

Senior Dinner Awards:

Brennan Butler – Tim Smythe award,

“This award is given to the student athlete of the North Country who best displays Tim Smythe’s leadership and courage and who inspires his/her teammates to rise to any challenge.”

Erin Brand – Malcom Sportsmanship award

“The permanent trophy was given by the late Herbert L. Malcolm, former Headmaster of the Lake Placid School now Northwood School, and the individual plaque is awarded each year to the male and female students who, in the opinion of the faculty Athletic Committee, have shown the best sportsmanship in athletics throughout the year.  The award recognizes qualities of character that enhance the excellence of the teams on which the individuals participate and that reflects positively on Northwood as an institution during athletic competition.”

Julie Devlin – Holt Hockey award,

“Charlie Holt served as a teacher and coach at Northwood School from 1955 to 1962. After Northwood, Charlie was hockey coach at Colby College and the University of New Hampshire.  Considered one of the “true gentlemen” of the game, Charlie Holt embodied the best qualities the game has to offer.  A plaque is awarded annually by Northwood School to the members of the boys and girls hockey squads who have shown the best sportsmanship in practice and in games.”

Hailey Sholty – Math Award

On Saturday, as the seniors packed up their rooms and loaded their cars, they tried to remember the wise words that Megan C had left them with in the Senior Video on Friday night, “‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”
