First Shift, First Goal – Huskies Hope the Season Opener is Preview of Things to Come

The Northwood Girls’ Hockey Team opened their season with a decisive 8-0 win against the local U19 team, The Lake Placid Rockets. After two weeks of practice, the girls were excited to have their first competition, and they got right to work scoring a beautiful goal on the first shift. After the center ice face-off, Sara D. grabbed the puck and moved it to her D partner, Maci H. Maci used the boards to pass to Nicole M. who then drop passed it to Cailey H. Cailey slid it to the net where Lauren B. was there to score. Watch the highlight below:

The Huskies kept the scoring rolling with Bridgit S and Nicole M. adding individual goals, Moe T. scoring her first and second goal of her Northwood career, Brooke B. sniping her first Northwood goal, and Cailey H. adding two for good measure. Katey S and Lindsay P split the game in net for the combined shut-out.

The girls also completed some team building over the weekend. In groups of three, they were sent on a blind scavenger hunt where they had to take pictures of meaningful team concepts. A few of the entries are below:

Tradition:
Our group thought that this would best represent tradition because ringing the bell at Northwood is only used for achievements. Winning a game or at graduation, it is something every student at Northwood looks forward to and a tradition that will never end.

This picture shows what being a teammate is all about. Support through compassion, trust, courage, communication, focusing, and overcoming adversity as a team.

This shows compassion, because you’re supporting your teammate in a time of need.
This shows trust, because you can open up to teammates and know that it’s safe with them.
This is an example of courage because you have the strength to let another person into your life. Communication is expressed here. The ability to communicate off the ice results in good communication on the ice.
Focusing because you’re giving your teammate your undivided attention.
This a perfect example of facing adversity as a team because no teammate goes through something difficult alone no matter what the obstacle may be.

If everyone has these characteristics on our team, we will be successful.

This picture represents courage. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of everyone in the auditorium at school meeting. Everyone has their eyes on you and it’s very nerve-racking.
