Northwood Seniors Lead Huskies to Best Season Ever

Last cheer of the season
Last cheer of the season

The class of 2014 played their last two hockey games as Northwood students this past weekend, leaving their mark on the program by helping to record the best season in the history of girls’ hockey at Northwood. The 30-16-7 record set the bar with most wins in a season, topping last year’s 27 wins and a 24 win season in 2005 when legendary coach, Tom Broderick, coached the girls. This season’s highs also included winning the Fall Foliage festival early in the season, beating rival NSA for the first time in 6 years, and making it to the semi-finals of the Fire on Ice tournament, the Northwood tournament, and the NAHA tournament.

The 30th victory came in a win against Rice Memorial in Burlington, VT. After a brief ceremony honoring the Rice seniors, the Knights had a jump and got on the board in the first shift of the period with a slapshot from the blue line. Northwood responded when they went on the power play and Erin Kishoni sniped a beautiful wrist shot off the rush. Rice scored again on a rebound, but the Huskies never lost their determination. Nicole Mensi scored in the second after making a beautiful between the legs move to beat a Rice D and then chip in her own rebound. Grace Nardiello scored the game winner on the power play when her wrist shot from the blue found a hole. The Huskies held on for the win and Lindsay Powers was strong in net, turning away all 12 shots in the second and third periods.

On Sunday, the Huskies hosted the Knights and started the day with their own ceremony to celebrate the class of 2013. Each senior was presented with flowers and a signed team picture as a brief tribute of their years at Northwood was read. Please see the senior tributes below.

After the ceremony, the teams had a brief warm-up and then it was time to drop the puck. Both teams knew that pride was at stake, and the game was fast and intense. A scoreless first period was followed by a Rice goal on the power play in the second. Northwood got their own power play chance a few minutes later, and Maci Hoskins put the puck over the Knight goalie’s shoulder to tie it up. Despite chances for both teams, neither could get past very good goaltending. Megan Messuri made 25 saves in regulation, then had to make a few more in overtime and even tried for an assist. The game ended after one OT period, and both teams had to be happy with their effort for the tie.

Huskies go .500 at NAHA Spring Showcase Tourny

The Northwood girls’ team enjoyed their last roadtrip of the season at the NAHA spring showcase. The action started Friday afternoon as they loaded their grocery carts full of food to bring to the townhouses that would be their home for the next two days. The team had a little time to settle in before departing for the newly renovated Stowe rink later in the afternoon to take on the host, NAHA Red.

The first game was a quick pace with Northwood and NAHA both moving through the neutral zone with speed, but neither getting too many quality chances due to good defensive zone play. In the second period, NAHA opened up the scoring, but Northwood answered back when Alyson blasted a shot from the point to even it out. NAHA scored in the third to take the lead. Northwood pulled their goalie to go for the tie, but the Winterhawks sent one in the empty net to solidify the win.

On Saturday morning, the Huskies faced the Ottawa Senators. This time, the Huskies played looser and more relaxed, which helped them play a game of puck possession. Cailey scored first with a beautiful shot in stride that beat the Sens goalie far side. Bridgit gave the Huskies a two goal lead with a nice backhand rebound. Katey got the shut-out in net, turning away 12 shots for the win.

The second game on Saturday against the Ottawa Ice was a “win and in” situation. If the Huskies won, they would advance to the semifinals. If they lost, they’d be in the consolation game on Sunday morning. Knowing the importance of the game, the Huskies started out strong, taking control of the game right away with their dominant passing and skating skills. Alyson scored first early in the game with a power play goal assisted by Maci. Maci put her own in the net on another power play goal after Nicole M. took a beautiful slapper from the point that she tipped in. Alyson added a second and Nicole M. put two more home for the anchor punch and a 5-0 win and a trip the semifinals with Megan getting the shut-out in net.

On Saturday night, the girls enjoyed a fun potluck dinner where each townhouse was responsible for bringing a few dishes. Steak, potatoes, chicken, pasta, peas, broccoli, corn, salad, and garlic bread were spread throughout and every Husky was stuffed to the brim by the time Sara whipped out the delicious deserts her mother had sent with her and the chocolate covered strawberries that Megan had carefully crafted.

Sunday morning was an early wake-up call against the NJ Colonials but the Huskies felt ready for the challenge. They started off strong against the well-matched Colonials. NJ scored first on the power play, but Northwood was able to tighten it up and stay in the game. NJ scored again in the second extending the lead. Nicki C. found a rebound and put it home a few minutes later to keep it close again. The Colonials third goal came with just two minutes left in the second, and despite a strong effort in the third period, the Huskies couldn’t convert any of their chances.

Next weekend, the Huskies play a home and home series against Rice for their last two games of the year. With a 29-14-6 record, they hope to take at least one of the games to give them their best record in the last 6 years.
