NAHA Red Ends Huskies Weekend

In the semifinal game of the 33rd Annual Northwood Invitational, the Huskies lined up against NAHA Red from Jay Peak, VT. The Winterhawks had rolled through the Iroquois division while out-scoring their opponents 22-1 on Friday and Saturday. Northwood’s game were tighter, but the Huskies felt confident going into the game.

The teams started battling from the first drop off the puck. Early in the first, Northwood’s sloppy defensive zone play gave up a few chances but Nicole G. held off the Winterhawks. They tightened up the d-zone and took it to NAHA, creating many scoring chances. When the Winterhawks took a penalty, the Huskies capitalized and scored a power play goalie when Kayley R. stuffed one beneath the goalie’s pads. NAHA answered back though a few minutes later on a quick shot from the slot that beat Nicole glove side. They took the lead on a power play with just two minutes left in the half.

In between halves, Northwood regrouped and rested. They came off the break with fire, but could not sneak another one in to even it up.

Overall, it was a successful weekend for the girls, and they hope to build off of that when they visit Burlington, VT for league games next weekend.

Huskies Move On to Semis

Going into Saturday afternoon’s game, the Northwood girls knew that they had to win to advance to the semis. To put even more pressure on the team, they not only had to win but they had to keep the goals against low in their final round robin opponent, Ontario Hockey Academy.

The huskies came through with both goals. They came out strong and confident and scored the first goal when Franny P carried the puck into the offensive end and scrapped in front of the net until the puck went over the goal line. A few minutes later, Erin B scored on the power play to go ahead by two.

Both teams came out strong in the second half, but the Huskies stayed composed. They played well defensively and held off the Mavericks. Nicole G played a fabulous game in net for the shutout and with the 2-0 win, the Huskies advanced to the semis.

It’s Northwood Tournament!

It is finally that time of year again! This weekend is the 33rd annual Northwood Tournament.  The huskies opened their tourney at 7:30 am Friday morning with a game against the Reston Raiders.  The pace was up tempo and the passes were crisp. Halle K put the first goal on the board for the huskies. She took the puck to the net and fired a shot low stick side. Shortly after,  With a rush from Reston, the game was tied 1-1.  Erin B scored the go ahead goal with her usual top left corner snipe. In the last two minutes of the game, a Reston pass slid by goalie Nicole G to end the game in a 2-2 tied.

The second game of the day, second of the tournament was against Trinity College. Again, the huskies were on their game firing shots on net from all angles, and not letting up on the forecheck. Wingers Casey K, Olga R, Kayley R, just to name a few were flying.  A couple bad turn overs put Northwood down 2-0, but the bench had enthusiasm and with first time Northwood goals by Brennan B and Cailey H the huskies were able to get out of the game with a 2-2 tie.

Northwood plays OHA on Saturday. The girls will be hunting for the win and the chance to move on in tournament play.

It’s That Time of Year…Exam Period

Casey K. and Franny P. reviewing their notes

As the first semester comes to a close, students at Northwood are busy preparing for and writing their midterm exams. After having a closed Reading Period weekend to study, exams started on Monday and continue through Thursday. During this stress-filled week of academics, practices are optional. Most of the team has made the optional ice times, seeing the skates as a welcome reprieve in their day.

Come Friday, the switch is turned and Northwood becomes Hockey Central as we host the 33rd Annual Invitational Tournament. Good luck to the Huskies – in the testing room and on the ice!

Ending to a Successful League Weekend of Play

On Saturday, the Huskies continued their league weekend of match-ups playing both games of the day at Nichols School in Buffalo, NY.  The first game was against Wyoming Seminary from PA.  The girls have come to find that they enjoy early morning games and played well.  The first goal was scored by Jess B. as she rushed the puck herself out of the defensive zone along the boards into Wy Sem territory; she leaned in hard on the defenseman and slid the puck in the back of the net.  Megan C. netted the second goal; she crashed the net hard and did not give up until she finished the play to the whistle.  Erin B. had two goals. She sniped a laser of a shot top left hand corner before the goalie even saw it, and a couple minutes later, just for assurance, did the same to the right hand corner.  With confidence and enthusiasm, the Huskies won 4-1.

The second game of the day was against Gilmour Academy.  The Huskies last saw Gilmour at the Cushing Tournament before the holiday break.  A battle always occurs when these two teams play because they are so similar in ability.  In this particular match-up, Gilmour won 2-0.

After a long day of playing hockey, we found it only fitting that we go check out a pro game so the whole team, as well as families, went to the Buffalo Sabres game vs. the Winnipeg Jets. (Pictured below)

Sunday, the last day of games, the Huskies played Ridley College.  This was a physical match-up with many penalties taken by both teams.  Ridley scored first on a penalty shot, and then again during 4-4 play when one of their players got by the Northwood defensemen, shot, and scored off of her own rebound. Northwood tallied their goal in the third off of a face-off. Erin B. scored making it 2-1, but with a minute left Ridley scored again to make the final 3-1.

The first weekend of play for the new year was successful and fun for all; next time the Huskies are on the ice will be during the 33rd annual Northwood Tournament! See you there!

Huskies Open New Year

On the first day of NAPHA play the Huskies split with one win and one loss. The first game of the day against Trinity College School was played at Niagara University. The girls were excited to be back from break and back on the ice. They controlled momentum for most of the game but went down 1-0 on a penalty kill early in second period. The Bears’ lead did not last long however when a rush from junior Erin B tied the game at 1-1. The game remained tied until a pass late in the third from Casey K found Halle K in the slot and she netted it top shelf for the win. This was the girls’ first win of the new year and they couldn’t be happier.

The second game of the day was against Nichols School at their home arena. The Huskies came to play but got into a hole early going down 4-0 before finally getting on the board with a goal from Casey K in the second. Erin B had the only other Northwood goal of the game on the power play in the third. The Huskies lost 9-2.

In between games the girls took an adventure to go see the American side of Niagara Falls. The sightseeing didn’t last long due to the cold weather and high winds, but much fun was had by all.
